Toray’s Fibrous Division is stepping up its efforts to boost sales in the underwear market. This move comes as the demand for functional fiber-based underwear continues to grow. Functional fibers have become increasingly popular due to their ability to enhance comfort and performance, and underwear happens to be one of the best ways for consumers to experience these benefits firsthand. As Yan Mu, the Minister of Long Fiber Business at Toray, emphasizes, “Underwear is not just a basic necessity—it’s a canvas for showcasing the unique features of functional fibers.â€
In recent years, the adoption of functional chemical fiber underwear has seen significant growth, particularly in the men's market. Just a decade ago, in 2003, the use of chemical fibers in men’s underwear accounted for only 3% of the market. However, this figure surged to 10% last year. This upward trend is further fueled by the rising popularity of pantyhose and other forms of functional undergarments, which have transformed the way people think about underwear as both a practical and fashionable item.
Recognizing this shift, Toray is not only focusing on nylon long fibers but also investing heavily in the development of polyester long and short fibers. By expanding its product portfolio, the company aims to capture a larger share of this growing market. As noted in a special issue of "Textile and Apparel Weekly" titled "Japan Fiber Information," the future looks promising for companies that innovate in this space. With the increasing consumer demand for high-performance fabrics, Toray is well-positioned to capitalize on this opportunity while setting new standards in the industry.
