The Hohenstein Institute, a leading German textile testing and certification organization, has released a report emphasizing the dangers associated with the transfer of harmful substances through clothing. The institute is currently developing a special textile coating designed to neutralize toxic chemicals found in smoke, aiming to reduce the health risks they pose.
According to the study, harmful substances from smoke can easily attach to personal clothing, particularly those worn by children. This poses a serious risk, as babies and young children are more vulnerable due to their sensitive skin and frequent contact with fabrics.
Researchers at the Hohenstein Institute have introduced the concept of "third-hand smoke" — a term used to describe how smoke residues and toxic chemicals settle on surfaces such as furniture, carpets, curtains, and even clothing. These particles can remain for long periods and are often more concentrated than the visible smoke that fills the air. When these toxins come into contact with human skin, they can be absorbed, potentially causing harm.
To better understand the effects, scientists at the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology (IHB) conducted experiments using models that simulate a baby's skin coming into contact with contaminated T-shirts. The results were alarming: for the first time, it was shown that neurotoxins can penetrate through the skin and reach deeper tissue layers. Similar tests were carried out on adult skin to compare the effects.
The findings revealed that when toxic substances like nicotine and other harmful chemicals enter the body, they can cause severe damage to both skin and nerve cells. This underscores the importance of preventing exposure, especially for children who are more susceptible to such threats.
