In order to boost the global competitiveness of China’s jewelry and jade products, maintain a stable domestic market pricing system, and build consumer confidence, the country is accelerating the development and revision of industry standards. The National Jewelry and Gemstone Standardization Technical Committee has been working on new national standards such as “Jewelry Grade†and “Method for Measuring Pearl Bead Thickness.†These updates are expected to bring greater clarity and transparency to the market.
As the New Year approaches, numerous promotions and discounts in the jewelry and jade sector have attracted many buyers. However, determining the quality and value of these products remains a challenge for consumers. Fortunately, four key jade jewelry standards—“Jade Classification,†“Method for Measuring Pearl Bead Thickness,†“Large-Grained Diamond Colorimetric Stone,†and “Chinese Freshwater Pearl Standard Sampleâ€â€”are now in the final approval stage. These standards aim to provide a reliable framework for evaluating product quality, helping consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.
Among the newly developed standards, “Jade Classification†and “Method for Measuring Pearl Bead Thickness†stand out. For a country with a rich jade culture, the absence of a national classification standard has long been a gap. According to Wang Manjun, director of the Research Department at the Jewelry and Jade Management Center, establishing a grading system is crucial for regulating the jade market. However, challenges such as color variation, species diversity, and high sample costs made the development of this standard particularly difficult. Before this, only Yunnan had introduced a local version.
After years of research and testing, the “Jade Classification†team employed methods like light source analysis, transmittance measurement, and colorimetry to create an authoritative technical standard. This is the first of its kind in China and even globally, featuring independent intellectual property and reaching international advanced levels.
For pearls, the thickness of the bead layer significantly affects luster and overall quality. Traditionally, measuring this involved destructive methods, where pearls were opened and compared visually with standard samples. This approach was subjective and lacked precision. Now, a new method using optical coherence tomography—a technology previously used in medicine—has been introduced. This non-destructive technique allows for rapid, accurate, and safe measurements, improving quality control for pearl producers.
The “Large-Grained Diamond Colorimetric Stone†and “Chinese Freshwater Pearl Standard Sample†are physical standards that complement existing theoretical guidelines. Previously, China lacked standardized samples for large diamonds and freshwater pearls, which limited the accuracy of evaluations. With these new standards, the industry can better align with global practices, meeting growing market demands.
China is one of the world's largest consumers of jewelry, spending over $10 billion annually. It also leads in pearl production, accounting for over 95% of global output. With such a massive market, the need for robust standards is more critical than ever. Without them, the industry faces issues like low-quality products flooding the market, stagnant growth, and difficulty competing internationally.
According to Shi Hongyue, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Jewelry and Gemstone Industry Association, the implementation of these new standards will help establish objective criteria for product evaluation. This will enable better market recognition of quality differences, encouraging companies to invest in innovation and improve product standards. Ultimately, it will drive the entire industry toward higher quality and greater competitiveness.
