In my view, whether ancient or modern, Chinese or foreign, all those who are called artists must possess a heart that is pure and deeply self-centered. This kind of selfishness isn’t about greed or ego in the narrow sense—it goes much deeper, reaching the level of the soul. It’s this very selfishness that enables an artist to set aside worldly distractions and create with complete confidence and sincerity. True artists never seek fame or public approval for their work. Instead, they walk their own artistic path, seeking only those few who can truly understand and resonate with them. They may be alone, but they are never lonely, for they are guided by their ideals and supported by the timeless presence of art.
Fan Weiping established his own studio, "Jiyun Pavilion," in 1996. Since then, most of the works from the "Ji Yun Ge" series have showcased two distinct styles: traditional sculpture and teapots. The tradition that Fan Weiping upholds is one of simplicity. Whether it's a "milk pot," "stone scoop pot," "beauty shoulder," or "Qinquan pot," he manages to capture their essence with the most minimalistic expressions. Yet, beneath these classic forms, there are always subtle signs of his creative touch, revealing a deep understanding and personal interpretation of tradition.
One of his works, "Chinese Sentiment," though not a masterpiece, is filled with emotion and warmth. The octahedral pillar body stands as solid and stable as a mountain, while the spout and handle, wrapped in auspicious clouds, resemble the wings of a Chinese watch standing proudly beside it. The "Hulu New Zealand" piece features a lion's head reaching toward the heavens—a powerful symbol of the Chinese nation. Despite the absence of decorative inscriptions, every detail—from the composition to the theme—reveals the artist’s sincere heart and deep connection to his culture.
Other works like "Dragon Walks in the World," "Han Feng Chu Yun," "Step by Step," "Swiftly Closed Hou," and "Shu" all reflect Fan Weiping’s talent and artistic mastery in both sculpture and teapot design. His creations are not just objects; they are expressions of his inner world and artistic philosophy.
Today, as Fan Weiping continues to explore and refine the art of purple clay, his passion deepens with each creation. He dedicates himself fully to his craft, much like his works—each one shaped through fire and water, becoming purer and more refined over time. In his world, only purple clay is his true companion, a silent partner in his lifelong artistic journey.
