In my view, whether ancient or modern, Chinese or foreign, all true artists possess a heart that is pure and deeply self-centered. This kind of selfishness isn't about greed or ego; rather, it's a spiritual devotion that elevates the artist above worldly distractions. Only through this deep sense of self can an artist fully commit to their craft, free from external pressures or expectations. True artists don’t create for fame or recognition—they work in solitude, driven by an inner vision. They may be alone in their journey, but they are never truly lonely, because art and belief are their constant companions.
Fan Weiping established his own studio, "Jiyun Pavilion," in 1996. Since then, most of his works under the "Ji Yun Ge" series have showcased two main styles: traditional craftsmanship and teapot design. Fan’s interpretation of tradition emphasizes simplicity. Whether it's a "milk pot," "stone scoop pot," "beauty shoulder," or "Qinquan pot," he manages to capture their essence with minimalistic expression. Yet, within these classic forms, there is always a subtle touch of his own creative spirit—evidence of his artistic evolution.
One of his notable pieces, "Chinese Sentiment," though not a masterpiece in scale, is filled with emotion. The octahedral body stands firm like a mountain, while the spout and handle, wrapped in auspicious cloud patterns, resemble the wings of a mythical Chinese watch. The lion-headed spout symbolizes the strength and pride of the Chinese nation. Though the piece lacks inscriptions, every detail—from its structure to its theme—reveals the artist’s heartfelt intention. Similarly, works like "Dragon Walks in the World," "Han Feng Chu Yun," "Step by Step," "Swiftly Closed Hou," and "Shu" all reflect Fan Weiping’s remarkable talent and dedication to sculpture and pottery.
Over time, as Fan Weiping continues to create and grow, the art of purple clay has become more than just a craft—it has become a part of his soul. He dedicates himself entirely to his work, and just as his creations are shaped through fire and water, so too is his heart refined and purified.
