Ecuador's textile and apparel industry plans to grow by 8%

The Ecuadorian government intends to consolidate the country's textile and clothing industry by implementing a special plan to increase the competitiveness of the textile and garment industry, Ecuador’s Minister of Industry Santiago. Leon said.

At the opening of the workshop to attend the "Ecuadorian Textile and Apparel: Macroeconomic Analysis" seminar, Santiago. Leon said that the textile and clothing sector provided direct employment opportunities for the country’s 127,000 people, of whom 73% were in urban areas and the remaining 27% came from rural areas.

Leon stated that in 2005-10, the textile and clothing sector in Ecuador grew at an average rate of 1.14% per year.

Leon said that by the end of 2011, the textile industry had contributed 5.8% to the economy of Ecuador.

According to the current plan to increase competitiveness, the goal is to increase the productivity of the textile and clothing industry by 8% over the next four years. Plans for improving competitiveness include consolidating the public-private dialogue process.

Leon said that an increase of 8% will meet the increase in domestic demand in recent years.
