Eight years ago, a board member of the Open Lab organization, Christina Mallon's arm motor neurons began to lose capacity. With the further deterioration of motor neuron disease, Mallon could no longer wear his own clothes.

But Christina Mallon is not alone, and nearly one in five Americans suffer from a disability. That's why open labs are starting to develop high-tech clothes for people with disabilities. A garment developed by the open lab allows MALLON to wear on its own arm and hand. This allowed her to live independently and continue to work, and this new product also brought her happiness.

The open lab was originally a public service project at MIT and later turned into a non-profit organization. The organization has partnered with Parsons School of Design in New York to work with engineers, designers and professional physiotherapists to create clothes for customers or to design gadgets based on customer needs. That was also where the product design assistant researcher Julia Liao met with Mallon.

Julia Liao said: "When we started this project, we wanted to understand the difficulties that Christina encountered in daily life. One of the difficulties was that she could not swipe the card at the New York subway station. So our team created a 3D printing Auxiliary device. When Christina took the subway, she was able to hang the accessory around her neck and swipe the card with the rotation of her neck.

Designer Jonathan Hayden also designed a jumpsuit for a customer below the chest. Jonathan said: "Our customer has to rely on the help of others to complete the dressing, so the design of the pull strap on the back will help them lift the leggings of the jumpsuit, and also let her complete some basics. Dressing action."

Technology takes up a very important part of the design process of open labs. Jonathan discusses product design with his customers with augmented reality. Grace Jun, executive director of the open lab, said: "I have seen some very useful breakthroughs in these groundbreaking technologies. I think the most useful for open labs is body scanning and 3D visualization. Computer software and fashion trends are combined."

The goal of an open lab is to extend the company's business through collaboration with technology companies and hospitals, and to extend the design to real life. “We see disability as part of human life,” Jun said. “As we get older, I mean you are likely to experience sprains or even backaches.
